I am really excited to see that my buddy Destin Daniel Cretton’s debut feature-length film, I Am Not A Hipster, is making a short tour of independent theatres across the States this week–including San Diego, San Francisco, New York (Jan. 10th: tonight!), and Portland (Jan. 11th: tomorrow!), with extended screenings in other fine cities, like LA, Atlanta and Bellingham. (Check out the schedule.) I know Destin from my time in San Diego, which this movie is just dripping with. I’ve only seen the preview, but it was a strange sensation of familiar landscapes and faces, set in a totally  fresh, cinematic and musical frame. Working with Destin on the score was another good friend, Joel P West, whose band The Tree Ring also appears in the film and soundtrack–which features a plethora of great San Diego artists, like my long-time favorites, The Donkeys. This is Destin’s second film to show at Sundance, the first being a short film entitled, Short Term 12, which went on to win Best Short Film there in 2009. Anyhow, I’m really looking forward to checking this out tonight, and if you’re a film/music lover, I highly recommend you do, too.
