QUESTIONS FOR THE STYLISTPosted BY FRANCES MAY ON May 26th, 2015
Victoria Mesenbrink has been a best friend for years. We met at a Project Runway viewing party years ago and bonded over being shop owners. She has since left retail and made a nice place for herself as one of the premiere stylists in the nation with a drool-worthy travel schedule. She styled and art directed the latest FM Lookbook, “Aloha”, and nailed it! Here is quick interview with her that we conducted last week.
How did you become a stylist?
Styling has always come naturally to me and I have been attracted to and interested in the fashion world since I was a child. I went to school for fashion but had no idea “wardrobe stylist” would be the role I connected with most. Funny how life pulls you in the direction you are meant to go if you just let it. Before officially stepping out as a “stylist only gal” I worked as a buyer for a small boutique and eventually opened my own boutique where I was really able to start focusing on styling. Since then I have been styling and art directing as a freelancer for many fashion and commercial clients for almost ten years. Time flies.

What inspires you to create?
I am really inspired by the people I surround myself with. I am constantly working with or just hanging out with some of the most talented people in the industry. It definitely can be difficult to make art for art’s sake because most of us need to make a living and taking the time to create simply as an outlet becomes harder to find the time for. I have spent a lot of time this year trying to MAKE that time and focusing on creating things for myself rather than others. We are usually working for an end goal to sell or promote something or someone, so making art for the sole purpose of beauty and creativity is the most inspiring thing an artist can do.
What’s in the 5 year plan? 10 year?
I am at a place in my career that I want to do / open / create / and accomplish so many more things, but timing is always such a hard aspect. I think in five years I would like to be working with bigger fashion brands more often and working more on the creative / concepting side of things. As much as I love styling, I am usually fulfilling someone else’s vision when, in reality, I just want to bring my vision to life or collaborate with designers to help their visions. In the future I would like to be working in a similar role as I did on the Frances May Aloha Summer Look Book. I alsoreally want to start my own capsule line of clothing and eventually run a small agency for stylists…so I guess that is the 10 year goal.
